US President Donald Trump has announced plans for a new class of heavily armed “Trump-class” warships to modernise and expand the US Navy. Unveiled in Florida, the proposal includes initially two large surface combatants with a displacement of 30,000–40,000 tonnes. Envisioned as multi-role platforms, the ships may feature missiles, lasers and hypersonic weapons. The move comes amid concerns over China’s growing naval strength and aims to revitalise US shipbuilding.
