The United Nations World Tourism Organization named Telangana's Pochampally village as one of the best tourism villages (UNWTO).
Pochampally is a village in the Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district famous for its hand-woven Ikat saris.
Pochampally Ikat was designated a Geographical Indicator (GI) in 2004 and is also known as Bhoodan Pochampally to commemorate Acharya Vinobha Bhave's Bhoodan movement, which began on April 18, 1951, from this village.
The UNWTO pilot initiative 'Best Tourism Villages' aims to award villages that are outstanding examples of rural destinations and demonstrate best practices in accordance with its specified nine evaluation areas.
It also aims to support villages to enhance their rural tourism potential through training and access to opportunities for improvement.
The award will be presented on December 2nd, at the 24th session of the United Nations World Tourism Organization's General Assembly in Madrid.
