The Environment, Climate Change, and Forest Department have designated the Kazhuveli wetland near Villupuram in Tamil Nadu as a bird sanctuary, and it will now be known as the 'Kazhuveli Birds Sanctuary.'
The 16th Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu is situated on 5,151.60 acres in Vanur and Marakkanam taluks.
The sanctuary is located on the east coast, close to the Bay of Bengal. On the East Coast, Kazhuveli is a globally significant wetland.
