After nearly 70 years of sustained health initiatives, Suriname has achieved the milestone of being certified malaria-free by the World Health Organization. It is the first country in the Amazon basin to attain this status. With this, 46 countries and 1 territory, including 12 from the Americas, are now officially malaria-free.
