  • Former Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit has been appointed the chairman of the search and selection committee for the appointment of Vice Chancellor in all state-run universities of West Bengal. The order was passed by a division bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice KV Viswanathan on 9 July 2024.
  • A two-judge bench ordered the formation of a six-member search and selection committee after a consensus between the state government and the governor, which would prepare a panel of three names for the post of vice-chancellor of each state-run university within two weeks.
  • The names recommended by the committee will be sent to the Chief Minister, who may reject or accept them. If there is a disagreement, the name will be placed before the Supreme Court for a final decision.
