  • President Anura Kumara Dissanayake's ruling coalition won a landslide victory in Sri Lanka's November 14 general election, breaking records of strong governments of the past, and making history in the island's ethnically minority-dominated north, east and mountainous region.
  • 15 November 2024 (NPP) won a total of 159 seats in the 225-member House, securing more than two-thirds majority. The opposition Samagi Jan Balawegaya (SJB or United People's Force) got just 40 seats.
