  • Sikkim celebrated the 209th Bhanu Jayanti on 13th July in memory of famous Nepali litterateur Bhanu Bhakta Acharya, the man responsible for translating Ramayana from Sanskrit to Nepali.
  • Typically, it is observed on July 13 annually, which is also the 29th day of the Nepali month of Ashadh.
  • Considered ‘Adi Kavi’ or the first poet of the Nepali language, the birth anniversary is celebrated as a festival in Sikkim.
  • Every year, people of Nepal, Sikkim, Darjeeling, and other countries with a Nepali-speaking population, such as Myanmar, Bhutan, and others, commemorate Bhanu Jayanti.
  • Previously, Nepali was only available in oral form. Bhanubhakta Acharya is regarded as the first poet to write in Nepali and a champion of the language in the world. Therefore, it is regarded highly by the community and literary folk.
