On the opening day of the fifth Test against England, Shubman Gill set a new benchmark by becoming the Indian captain with the highest number of runs in a single Test series. He surpassed the legendary Sunil Gavaskar's tally of 732 runs, scored during the six-match home series against the West Indies in 1978–79. Although Gill was dismissed for 21 in the latest match, his total run tally in the ongoing series has reached 743, making this his most prolific series as a captain.
