  • The Shinku La tunnel, set to begin construction in mid-September, is located at an altitude of 15,800 feet and will connect Manali to Leh via Nimmu-Padam-Darcha.
  • It will reduce the distance by 60 km and provide a crucial third connectivity option to Ladakh, enhancing military mobility and logistical support in the region.
  • This is particularly significant given the ongoing military standoff between India and China in eastern Ladakh.
  • The Shinku La tunnel is part of India's broader strategy to improve border infrastructure. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has completed over 330 projects, significantly enhancing the mobility of Indian armed forces along the border with China.
  • These efforts include the ongoing upgrade of the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road, which offers a shorter route with only one pass to traverse, further bolstering strategic connectivity.
  • The construction of the Shinku La tunnel amidst the prolonged military standoff with China underscores India's proactive approach to strengthening its defenses.
  • The tunnel and other infrastructure projects are aimed at improving operational readiness and ensuring quicker troop movement and logistical supply to critical regions like Ladakh, thereby enhancing India's military capabilities and security along its borders.
