  • Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi has created global medical history by becoming the first hospital worldwide to administer ITVISMA, a one-time gene therapy for spinal muscular atrophy, marking a major advancement in precision medicine.
  • The therapy was administered on December 28, 2025, under the supervision of the Department of Health, Abu Dhabi, following regulatory approval by the UAE on November 25, making it the second country after the United States to authorise the treatment.
  • Developed by Novartis, ITVISMA works by replacing the defective SMN1 gene to restore production of the survival motor neuron protein.
