  • Sarada Menon, India's first female psychiatrist, died at the age of 98. 
  • She has received numerous honours, including the Padma Bhusan in 1992 for her work in the field of mental health.
  • She was the country's first female psychiatrist when she started working in 1959 at what is now the Institute of Mental Health (previously the government Kilpauk mental hospital) in Chennai.
  • In 1984, Menon established the Schizophrenia Research Foundation (SCARF), a non-profit organisation dedicated to the study of schizophrenia.
