Saudi Arabia has officially abolished its 50-year-old Kafala (labour sponsorship) system, benefiting nearly 13 million migrant workers, including 2.6 million Indians. Implemented in June 2025 under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030, the reform frees workers from employer control over job changes, travel, and legal rights. The move aligns with ILO standards and aims to protect worker rights, reduce exploitation, and enhance Saudi Arabia’s global image ahead of the 2029 Asian Winter Games. The Kafala system, long criticised as “modern-day slavery,” had restricted workers’ freedom for decades. Rights groups hailed the reform as historic.
