Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has been designated as a ‘Global Champion for Road Safety’ by the United Nations, supporting global efforts to reduce road traffic fatalities. In a video message, he urged citizens to follow traffic rules, wear seat belts and helmets, and adopt responsible driving habits, emphasising that “Every life matters.”
Jean Todt, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, highlighted the role of public figures in promoting safer road behaviour. The initiative aligns with the UN’s Decade of Action for Road Safety, which aims to significantly reduce global road deaths. In India, the World Health Organization is supporting states like Rajasthan, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Assam to improve blackspots, school zones and emergency care systems.
