  • Romania and Bulgaria became full members of the Schengen Area on 1 January 2025, 13 years after both countries gained full membership in the Schengen Area. 
  • Earlier they had partial membership, with entry by air and sea route, but not independent entry by land.
  • The Schengen Area was established in 1985 with the aim of facilitating no-border checks and document-free travel for citizens of member states, ensuring free movement for EU citizens and other residents.
