Romania and Bulgaria became full members of the Schengen Area on 1 January 2025, 13 years after both countries gained full membership in the Schengen Area.
Earlier they had partial membership, with entry by air and sea route, but not independent entry by land.
The Schengen Area was established in 1985 with the aim of facilitating no-border checks and document-free travel for citizens of member states, ensuring free movement for EU citizens and other residents.
