  • On October 17, 2023, the Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court gave an important decision on gay marriage.
  • The Supreme Court has not recognized its same-sex marriage.
  • A constitutional bench of 5 judges gave this decision with a majority of 3 - 2.
  • The bench comprised Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices SK Kaul, SR Bhatt, Hima Kohli and PS Narasimha.
  • A high-powered committee of the Center will investigate the concerns of gay couples.
  • This committee will be chaired by the Union Cabinet Secretary and the Chief Executives of the States will be its members.
  • Currently gay marriages are recognized in 34 countries of the world.
