In October, 2023, the Sri Lankan government has announced to provide free tourist visas to Indian citizens.
This free visa scheme will remain in force till March 31, 2024.
After that this plan will be reconsidered.
Apart from India, Sri Lanka has also offered free tourist visa to 6 other countries.
The move aims to revive Sri Lanka's tourism industry.
It has been taken to target five million arrivals by 2026.
Before the Corona pandemic, tourism was the third largest source of foreign exchange inflow into Sri Lanka.
