Meghalaya's Lakadong turmeric will be given GI tag in December 2023.
The quantity of curcumin, the main element of turmeric, is quite high in this variety.
It is mainly cultivated in Lakadong area of Jaintia Hills of the state.
Lakadong turmeric is considered one of the best varieties of turmeric in the world.
The amount of curcumin in it is about 6.8-7.5%.
It has a deep color and is grown organically without the use of fertilizers.
Apart from Lakadong turmeric, Garo Dakmanda (traditional attire), Larnai pottery and Garo Chubichi (alcoholic beverages) of Meghalaya have been given the coveted GI tag.
