  • Meghalaya's Lakadong turmeric will be given GI tag in December 2023.
  • The quantity of curcumin, the main element of turmeric, is quite high in this variety.
  • It is mainly cultivated in Lakadong area of Jaintia Hills of the state.
  • Lakadong turmeric is considered one of the best varieties of turmeric in the world.
  • The amount of curcumin in it is about 6.8-7.5%.
  • It has a deep color and is grown organically without the use of fertilizers.
  • Apart from Lakadong turmeric, Garo Dakmanda (traditional attire), Larnai pottery and Garo Chubichi (alcoholic beverages) of Meghalaya have been given the coveted GI tag.
