  • India’s 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu achieved first criticality on April 6, 2026.
  • This is a major milestone in India’s three-stage nuclear power programme.
  • The reactor was designed indigenously by IGCAR and built by BHAVINI.
  • Unlike conventional reactors, PFBR breeds more fuel than it consumes by converting Uranium-238 into Plutonium-239.
  • It will eventually help utilize India’s abundant thorium reserves for clean energy.
  • The achievement strengthens India’s energy security and commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat in nuclear technology.
