In a keynote address ahead of Bastille Day, French President Emmanuel Macron announced a €6.5 billion boost in military spending over the next two years in response to growing threats including Russian aggression, terrorism, and cyber warfare. Macron emphasized that France aims to reach €64 billion in annual defence expenditure by 2027 — double the €32 billion when he assumed office in 2017 — calling this era the most dangerous since 1945. The move is supported by conservative and far-right factions, while leftist groups express concern over the trade-off with social welfare schemes.
