  • Poet and activist Maya Angelou has become the first Black woman to appear on the US quarter, in a new version of the coin unveiled by the US Mint.
  • Angelou, a poet, and activist was the first black woman to write and perform a poem at a presidential inauguration. 
  • In 2010, she was given a Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest US civilian award by President Barack Obama.
  • Maya Angelou was an essayist and poet who worked with civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.
