Recently, Palau, a Pacific island nation, made history by hosting the world’s first-ever live underwater interview. President Surangel Whipps Jr. conducted the conversation underwater with Estonian Olympic swimmer and ocean activist Merle Liivand. The interview used LiFi Talking Mask technology, which transmits sound via light, specially designed for underwater communication. This pioneering initiative aimed to raise global awareness about ocean conservation and highlight the risks of rising sea levels for small island nations like Palau. Previous underwater messages by leaders from Maldives, Seychelles and Tuvalu raised climate awareness, but this was the first live underwater interview, emphasizing the urgent need to protect our oceans.
