  • Shakuntala Chowdhary (102), Gandhian from Assam, who was honoured with the Padma Shri this year, passed away.
  • She was undergoing treatment for the last 10 years and died of old age-related ailments.
  • Shakuntala Choudhury led the mission for 20 years amid many developments like Chinese invasion, Tibetan refugee crisis, linguistic movement of 1960s. 
  • In her life, she was also associated with Vinoba Bhave and participated in a one and a half year 'padayatra' in Assam during the last phase of his famous "Bhudan" movement.
