  • North Korea has successfully launched a hypersonic missile as part of efforts to modernize its strategic weapons systems.
  • It’s the second known test-flight of a hypersonic missile since North Korea first tested such a weapon last September.
  • Hypersonic weapons, which fly at speeds in excess of Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound, could pose crucial challenges to missile defense systems because of their speed and maneuverability.
