The 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar Yaghi for pioneering metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), highly porous molecular structures that enable the passage of gases and chemicals. These innovative frameworks can trap carbon dioxide, extract water from dry air, store hazardous gases, and accelerate chemical reactions. Starting with research in 1989, the trio transformed molecular design by linking metal ions with organic molecules to form durable, open crystal structures. Today, MOFs are seen as a breakthrough technology with wide-ranging environmental and industrial uses, including tackling pollution and water scarcity.
