  • Jesmond Tutu was one of South Africa's most well-known figures, both at home and internationally. He was the last South African to earn the Nobel Peace Prize while still alive. 
  • In South Africa, he is regarded as an anti-apartheid symbol.
  • Desmond Tutu has been referred to as the country's moral compass.
  • He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his contribution to the campaign to end apartheid.
  • He also received the Gandhi Peace Prize in India in 2007.
