In South Africa, he is regarded as an anti-apartheid symbol.
Desmond Tutu has been referred to as the country's moral compass.
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his contribution to the campaign to end apartheid.
He also received the Gandhi Peace Prize in India in 2007.
