  • Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh are the poorest states in the country, according to the NITI Aayog's Multidimensional Poverty Index.
  • Kerala has emerged as the state with the lowest level of poverty in India.
  • The poorest Union Territories in the country are Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh, Daman and Diu, and Chandigarh.
  • According to the report, India's national MPI measure employs the globally recognised and reliable methodology developed by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
  • According to the index, 51.91 percent of the population in Bihar is poor, followed by 42.16 percent in Jharkhand and 37.79 percent in Uttar Pradesh. While Madhya Pradesh (36.65%) is ranked fourth in the index, Meghalaya (32.67%) is ranked fifth.
  • According to this index, while Bihar is the poorest state, on one hand, it also has the highest number of malnourished people.
