The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to restore the Suav’s classification from a drain to a river in official records and gazette notifications. The order relates to the Suav, a tributary of the Rapti River in Balrampur district.
The bench led by Justice Prakash Srivastava instructed authorities to amend revenue records within three months and halt new construction in floodplain zones until proper demarcation. The case was taken up under suo motu powers, citing the Supreme Court judgment in Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai vs Ankita Sinha.
The tribunal also directed monitoring of water quality, demarcation of active floodplains, and community-led rejuvenation measures. Non-compliance will attract penalties under Section 26 of the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010.
