Excavations at Lakkundi village in Karnataka’s Gadag district have revealed Neolithic-period relics, highlighting its ancient and layered history beyond medieval temples. The findings reinforce efforts to secure UNESCO World Heritage status for the historic site.
Once known as Lokkigundi, Lakkundi flourished under the Chalukya, Yadava and Hoysala dynasties and was a major religious and cultural centre. The Karnataka government has revived conservation efforts, collecting over 1,050 artefacts and preparing a proposal for UNESCO’s tentative list.
