National Education Day is celebrated in India every year on 11 November.
The day is observed to honour Maulana Abul Kalam, India's first Union Education Minister.
Kalam was the country's first Union Education Minister after independence.
National Education Day is observed in the country to commemorate Kalam's birth anniversary.
He served as the education minister of independent India from 1947 to 1958.
The first National Education Day was observed on November 11, 2008.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development established National Education Day in 2008 to celebrate the birthday of this great son (Maulana Abul Kalam Azad) of India by recalling his contribution to the cause of education in India.
