  • NASA has launched DART, a first-of-its-kind mission to alter the path of an asteroid by deliberately crashing a spacecraft into it.
  • The mission's goal is to crash a space probe into the asteroid in order to change its speed and course and prevent it from colliding with the Earth.
  • DART stands for Double Asteroid Redirection Test.
  • On November 24, 2021, the $325 million DART mission was launched into orbit atop a Space-X Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
  • The mission's goal is to test asteroid-deflecting technology.
