The Ministry of Mines has launched the State Mining Readiness Index (SMRI) to promote sustainable, transparent, and competitive mining across India. Developed with IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, the index assesses states on auction performance, exploration, regulation, and eco-friendly practices. Top performers include Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat (Category A), Goa, Uttar Pradesh, and Assam (Category B), and Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Tripura (Category C). The SMRI aims to boost mining reforms, attract investment, and align the sector with India’s net-zero and self-reliance goals.
