  • On October 26, 1948, King Hari Singh of Jammu and Kashmir initiated the merger of Kashmir with India.
  • On this day, Hari Singh had signed the merger deed.
  • Lord Mountbatten, the then Governor-General of India, formally accepted the document a day later.
  • This important agreement provided the Indian Parliament with the authority to make laws on matters of defence, foreign affairs and communications relating to Jammu and Kashmir.
  • In the year 2019, Jammu and Kashmir was made a Union Territory by the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act.
