Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her relentless advocacy for democratic rights and efforts to foster a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy in Venezuela. Born on 7 October 1967, Machado co-founded the civil organization Súmate, promoting free and fair elections and has served as a member of Venezuela’s National Assembly. Despite facing government harassment and travel restrictions, she continues to champion human rights and democratic freedoms, uniting a once-divided opposition under her leadership. The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised her as a “key, unifying figure” in Venezuela’s political landscape. The Nobel Peace Prize ceremony will be held on 10 December 2025 in Oslo, Norway.
