Malta has become the first country in the European Union to legalise cannabis for personal use and consumption at home.
People over the age of 18 will be allowed to possess up to 7 gms of cannabis and cultivate up to 4 plants at home under the new legislation.
Consuming cannabis in public, on the other hand, remains illegal and punishable by a fine of 235 euros.
Consuming the drug in front of a child may also result in a fine.
Malta is also attempting to establish itself as a European leader in the production of medical cannabis, having passed legislation in 2018 to allow the cultivation of such cannabis for medicinal and research purposes.
