  • Malta has become the first country in the European Union to legalise cannabis for personal use and consumption at home.
  • People over the age of 18 will be allowed to possess up to 7 gms of cannabis and cultivate up to 4 plants at home under the new legislation.
  • Consuming cannabis in public, on the other hand, remains illegal and punishable by a fine of 235 euros.
  • Consuming the drug in front of a child may also result in a fine.
  • Malta is also attempting to establish itself as a European leader in the production of medical cannabis, having passed legislation in 2018 to allow the cultivation of such cannabis for medicinal and research purposes.
