Daily Current Affairs / Madras High Court Declares Cryptocurrency as “Property” Under Indian Law
Category : Business and economics Published on: October 27 2025
In a landmark judgment, the Madras High Court has ruled that cryptocurrency qualifies as “property” under Indian law. Justice N. Anand Venkatesh clarified that while crypto is not legal tender or a tangible asset, it holds all essential features of property — it can be owned, enjoyed, and held in trust. The ruling, based on a case involving frozen XRP holdings on WazirX, ensures legal protection for investors and empowers Indian courts to handle crypto-related disputes. This verdict is a major step toward shaping India’s digital asset regulation and investor safeguards.
