A new peer-reviewed research in PLOS ONE has found Ladakh is home to the world's highest recorded density of snow leopards. With 477 animals, almost 68 per cent of India's estimated 709 snow leopards are in the Union Territory. The population covers approximately 47,572 km² of Ladakh's mountainous land.
