Following a cargo ship capsizing 14.6 nautical miles off the Kerala coast on May 24, the state government declared it a “State-specific disaster.” The incident, which dumped 640 containers—12 of them containing hazardous materials—into the sea, poses serious environmental and economic risks, with several containers already washing up along the coastline.
