The Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to rename Kerala as ‘Keralam’, following a unanimous resolution passed by the Kerala Legislative Assembly in June 2024. The move initiates the constitutional process under Article 3, which empowers Parliament to alter the name of a state after seeking the concerned legislature’s views.
The proposed Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 will now be referred to the State Assembly before being introduced in Parliament with the President’s recommendation. The amendment will modify the First Schedule of the Constitution, which lists states and union territories. Formed on November 1, 1956 under the States Reorganisation Act, Kerala observes the day as Kerala Piravi.
If passed by Parliament and assented to by the President, ‘Keralam’ will become the official constitutional name, reflecting the state’s linguistic and cultural identity.
