International Astronomical Union (IAU) approved naming a massive 70–77 km crater in the Xanthe Terra region as “M.S. Krishnan Crater”, honoring India’s renowned geologist and first Indian director of the Geological Survey of India. The crater’s inner plain is named “Krishnan Palus” and an adjoining valley “Periyar Vallis”. Surrounding smaller craters have been named after famous Kerala locations: Valiamala, Thumba, Bekal, and Varkala. This marks the first time Kerala’s geography and scientific heritage have been recognized on Mars.
