  • UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has named Catherine Russell, an assistant to US President Joe Biden, as the new head of UNICEF.
  • Russell is also the director of the White House Office of Presidential Personnel, and from 2013 to 2017, she was the State Department's ambassador-at-large for global women's issues.
  • She will take over for Henrietta Fore, who stepped down in July.
  • Katherine Russell has been involved in Democratic politics since the mid-1980s as a lawyer.
