  • Joshimath, the gateway to Hemkund Sahib and Badrinath, has been declared a landslide-subsidence zone.
  • The tiny town of Joshimath in Uttarakhand is on edge with 610 of a total of 4,500 buildings developing cracks.
  • Joshimath is a hill town located on the Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway (NH-7) in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.
  • The city is a tourist town as it serves as a rest stop for people visiting Badrinath, Auli, Valley of Flowers, and Hemkund Sahib.
  • The United States Geological Survey describes land subsidence as a gradual settling or sudden sinking of the Earth’s surface due to removal or displacement of subsurface earth materials. 
  • Subsidence is most often caused by the removal of water, oil, natural gas, or mineral resources out of the ground by pumping, fracking, or mining activities. This feature can also be caused by natural events such as earthquakes, soil compaction, erosion and sinkhole formation.
