Jeremiah Manley was elected as the next Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands, defeating former opposition leader Matthew Vale in a parliamentary vote of 31 to 18.
Manele emphasized his commitment to serving the interests of the people and the country above all else, pledging to prioritize reviewing the nation's budget, building infrastructure, and investing in forestry, minerals, fisheries, agriculture, and tourism.
The election outcome reflects a complex political landscape in the Solomon Islands, with Manele winning under the Coalition for National Unity and Transformation (CNUT) banner, while former Premier Manasseh Sogavare's party won 15 out of 50 seats.
The election was closely watched by China and the US, highlighting the strategic significance of the Solomon Islands in the Asia-Pacific region amid geopolitical competition.
