  • Japan started issuing new 10,000 yen, 5,000 yen, and 1,000 yen banknotes on 3rd July 2024, marking the first redesign since 2004.
  • The new banknotes incorporate three-dimensional hologram technology, the first use of this technology on any country’s currency, to combat counterfeiting.
  • The new banknotes have a universal design to accommodate the visually impaired and foreigners, and the current banknotes will remain legal tender.
