Italy inaugurated the "VC Yashwant Ghadege Sundiyal Memorial" in honor of the Indian Army's significant contribution during World War II.
The memorial, located in Montone, Perugia, honours the bravery of the Indian soldiers who fought during the campaign, and specifically remembers Naik Yeshwant Ghadge, a Victoria Cross recipient, who died while fighting on the heights of the Upper Tiber Valley.
The monument's motto, "Omines sub - eodem soul," translates to "We all live under the same sun" in Hindi.
23,722 Indian soldiers were killed, with 5,782 making the ultimate sacrifice. Their memory lives on in the 40 Commonwealth War Graves scattered across Italy, where they are eternally remembered.
