Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in collaboration with Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE) successfully conducted a series of Drogue Parachute Deployment Tests to qualify the drogue parachutes, affirming their preparedness for integration into the Test Vehicle Demonstration (TV-D1) under the Gaganyaan mission.
The tests were held at the Rail Track Rocket Sled (RTRS) facility of the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory of DRDO, Chandigarh.
Distinguished by their conical ribbon-style configuration with diameter of 5.8 metres, these drogue parachutes find their place within pyro-based devices called mortars.
Ingeniously engineered, these devices are designed to precisely expel the parachutes into the atmosphere upon receiving the command.
In March 2023, RTRS tests for the Pilot and Apex cover separation parachutes were carried out, further underscoring the advancement of the Gaganyaan mission’s parachute system development.
