  • Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in collaboration with Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE) successfully conducted a series of Drogue Parachute Deployment Tests to qualify the drogue parachutes, affirming their preparedness for integration into the Test Vehicle Demonstration (TV-D1) under the Gaganyaan mission.
  • The tests were held at the Rail Track Rocket Sled (RTRS) facility of the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory of DRDO, Chandigarh.
  • Distinguished by their conical ribbon-style configuration with diameter of 5.8 metres, these drogue parachutes find their place within pyro-based devices called mortars.
  • Ingeniously engineered, these devices are designed to precisely expel the parachutes into the atmosphere upon receiving the command.
  • In March 2023, RTRS tests for the Pilot and Apex cover separation parachutes were carried out, further underscoring the advancement of the Gaganyaan mission’s parachute system development.
