Category : Appointment/Resignation Published on: January 06 2026
Iran has appointed Abdolnasser Hemmati as the new governor of its Central Bank amid soaring inflation, a collapsing rial, and widespread protests. The rial fell to 1.38 million per US dollar, intensifying public anger over rising prices. Hemmati replaces Mohammad Reza Farzin, who resigned during escalating unrest. Protests have spread beyond Tehran, with fatalities reported in several cities. The economic turmoil, compounded by Western sanctions, has heightened social tensions and drawn international attention to Iran’s crisis.
