  • The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 26 March 2026 announced a new policy limiting eligibility for female category events at the Olympics to biological females only. Starting from the Los Angeles 2028 Games, all athletes wishing to compete in women’s events must undergo a mandatory one-time SRY gene screening via saliva, cheek swab or blood sample.
  • The presence of the SRY gene, which triggers male biological development, will disqualify transgender women and most athletes with Differences of Sex Development (DSD) who experienced male puberty. IOC President Kirsty Coventry stated the decision is based on scientific evidence to ensure fairness, safety and integrity in women’s sports. Rare exceptions may apply for conditions like Complete Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome. The policy will not apply retroactively. (98 words)
