August 9 is celebrated as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples across the world.
The celebration highlights the role of indigenous people and the importance of preserving their rights, communities and knowledge they gathered and passed down over centuries.
The theme of International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples this year is “The Role of Indigenous Women in the Preservation and Transmission of Traditional Knowledge.”
The United Nations had organized a special meeting on 9 August 1982 in the interest of Indigenous Peoples. Since then, World Indigenous Day is celebrated on 9 August each year to raise awareness and protect the rights of the world's indigenous population.
