  • August 9 is celebrated as the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples across the world. 
  • The celebration highlights the role of indigenous people and the importance of preserving their rights, communities and knowledge they gathered and passed down over centuries.
  • The theme of International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples this year is “The Role of Indigenous Women in the Preservation and Transmission of Traditional Knowledge.”
  • The United Nations had organized a special meeting on 9 August 1982 in the interest of Indigenous Peoples. Since then, World Indigenous Day is celebrated on 9 August each year to raise awareness and protect the rights of the world's indigenous population.
