The United Nations has declared October 23 as the International Day of the Snow Leopard to promote global cooperation in conserving this rare and majestic big cat, often called the “ghost of the mountains.” Found in 12 countries across Central and South Asia, including India, China, Nepal, and Bhutan, the snow leopard plays a vital role in maintaining the health of high-altitude ecosystems. Classified as “Vulnerable” by the IUCN, the species faces threats such as habitat loss, poaching, declining prey, and climate change.
