The International Day of Older Persons 2025 was observed on 1st October with the theme “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being and Our Rights.” Declared by the UN General Assembly in 1990, the day highlights the vital role of senior citizens in health equity, financial stability, community resilience, and human rights advocacy. In April 2025, the UN Human Rights Council adopted Resolution 58/13 to draft a legally binding instrument on the rights of older persons. With the global population of elderly expected to reach 17% by 2050, the observance stresses the urgency of creating inclusive, age-friendly policies, especially in developing countries.
